Service Provider FAQ

How is Unity Licensed?

Unity is licensed centrally from the Kakapo Systems licensing server. Typically, the Service Provider provisioning system will send an XML request to the Kakapo Systems licensing server to allocate the appropriate Unity license when the user is provisioned. In this way, provisioning Unity is streamlined within the existing Service Provider provisioning process.

If enabled by the Service Provider, the user can provision themselves through User Self Fulfilment at the end of a trial period. Service Providers must purchase a pool of licenses in advance.

A third option is to manually allocate licenses through the Kakapo Systems Partner Web Portal.

How do free trials work?

Because Unity is licensed independently of BroadWorks, a trial can be dynamically created without Service Provider customer service teams having to allocate the Unity service to the trial user. When a user starts Unity for the first time, they authenticate with the host BroadWorks system and with the Unity Licensing Server. If they are not a licensed user of Unity they are allocated a free trial, which can be up to 14 days depending on Service Provider preference. Once the trial has expired, the user is advised the cost specified by the Service Provider and prompted to ring the appropriate customer service number, or the user can self provision through User Self Fulfilment.

How does User Self Fulfilment work?

In simple terms, User Self Fulfilment allows Service Providers to deploy Unity without burdening Customer Service teams. Each Service Provider can specify a default trial length and Unity license costs to the user as part of their branding parameters as specified in Unity Skin Designer. When the trial expires Unity will present the user the option to click to authorise the purchase of Unity Lite or Unity Pro. This will immediately allocate the user the appropriate license. No additional information is required as the Licensing Server will capture the user hierarchy including Service Provider, Group, Department and User. At the end of each month, Kakapo Systems will provide a report of the licenses consumed to allow Service Providers to invoice accordingly. This report is available in XML or CSV format.

What auditing of licenses is available?

The Partner Web Portal provides real time visibility of the number of licenses being consumed, their type, the number of trials in progress and number of licenses yet to be allocated.

What are the differences between Unity Lite and Unity Pro?

Unity is available in two variants; Lite and Pro. The differences in functionality are as follows;

User Status Unity Lite is limited to displaying 8 users. Unity Pro will display 20 users
Instant Messaging [IM] Not available in Unity Lite
Custom Directories Not available in Unity Lite
Dynamically Logging In/Out of Call Centre Groups Not available in Unity Lite

What branding capabilities are there?

Unity can be branded with Unity Skin Designer, which is provided without charge with Unity Licenses. Skin Designer will allow multiple brands to be created for that Service Provider. So it is possible to extend branding options to distribution partners. Skin Designer will allow a logo/URL to be displayed, all font size, font colour, font type, border size, background colour and other variables that determine the aesthetic of the interface to be changed. Furthermore, Skin Designer can pre-populate with the Service Provider EWS server address and port. This simplifies the installation process for the user. The settings in Skin Designer also govern what User Self Fulfilment options are presented to the user and how long their trial can be.

Where does the Unity Client get the brand file from?

Brand files are stored on a Service Provider web server. Each time Unity starts it will reference this file allowing simple transition if the Service Provider needs to change aspects of the brand file. If the web server is unavailable when unity starts it will load a "last known good" skin stored locally on the client PC

How many brands can I make?

There is no real limit. In the event that the Service Provider has a large number of skins [20+] the user may experience a delay logging into Unity as the large brand file is downloaded. This is overcome by the Service Provider creating separate brand files with up to 10 skins each.

What happens when I change BroadWorks versions?

In this way, the BroadWorks version is transparent to the user and the Service Provider has a seamless upgrade path.
